Methods for using the AGFA Duoscan Scanner

The purpose of this web site is to entice and instruct the users of the Center for Microscopy and Imaging at the University of Illinois to use the DuoScan Scanner made by the AGFA Company.

The image is captured by using an AGFA PhotoShop plug in called FotoLook. The version of Photoshop currently used in this lab is PhotoShop 4.0, put out by the Adobe Corporation

The DuoScan does far more than the average home scanner (and of course it costs more). The transparency tray actually works well with both 35mm and with the standard TEM film of 3.25 x 4 inches.

We have used this instrument for TEM film, 35mm film, Plate / Xray film, standard prints (Black and white as well as color)Also, scanning in objects placed on the top plate which results in copystand like results.

Images can even be made with protein cellulose acetate blot gels. Probably one of the most exciting finds was that we could use the scanner as a densitometer on blot gels. Especially, gels that seemed to have hardly any information in them, resulted in images that had detailed information in them. For more on this technique see the Cellulose Acetate technique and images in corresponding anchor below.
